In 1819 Nikolai Sinebrychoff bought brewing right at an auction. Then on October 13th of 1819 the Imperial Committee for Reconstruction granted him the right to build a brewery in Helsinki.
Nikolai Sinebrychoff bought the Osterberg brewery at Vanhakaupunki and began the production of beer in 1820. At this time he also started the surveying for his own brewery in Hietalahti. The building began in 1821.
In 1825 the brewery was employing 1 foreman, 1 apprentice and 3 works. This grew to 2 bookkeepers, 1 brewmaster, 1 master distiller, 31 labourers and 3 maids by 1830.
In 1831 Nikolai Sinebrychoff purchased the right to a spirits monopoly at an auction. A year later plans for a new distillery were approved.
By 1836 the production plant at Hietalahti had grown to 35,953 square meters and was valued at 3,834 roubles.
Nikolai Sinebrychoff died in 1848 and left the company to his brothers, Ivan and Paul Sinebrychoff. Eventually Paul would take over the company by himself.
Paul continued to grow the brewery and purchased additional land in 1852 and 1855. He also was able to renew the right to distil spirits until 1957. By 1860 the brewery was employing 53 people and the production was valued at FIM 739,000.
